White House Cyber Policy Review: And a Cyber Czar

I enjoyed listening to the President today as he provided an update on where we are in our efforts to enhance our freedom of action in cyberspace.  All the details are on the White House website and I hope you visit there yourself to download the 60-day cyberspace policy review. Details are here: http://www.whitehouse.gov/CyberReview/ I have been reading the report already-- and will also read all the papers and studies referenced there. So far I have … [Read more...]

Washington Tech Titan Reception

Washingtonian magazine held a very nice reception last night at the Freer Gallery.  They invited everyone from their list of the 100 DC tech leaders.   I'm still not sure how I made it on the list but I most definately wanted to be at the reception to socialize with some old and new friends. One of the first folks I chatted with was Garrett Graff, author of the Tech Titan's piece.  Garrett is as polished as his writings-- a real gentleman.   Click … [Read more...]

Five Megatrends in Enterprise IT

Like Yogi Berra said: "It's tough to make predictions, especially about the future."   This is especially true about technology.  Things are changing so fast in the tech world it is hard to keep up with the state of today's IT, which means it is even harder to predict where it is going tomorrow.  I like to start my predictions of the future of IT with caveats like those so you realize it is ok to question my every assumption as we try to figure out … [Read more...]

Work on “Stuff That Matters”

Over the last couple years there has been a meta-theme in Tim O'Reilly's discussions, blog entries and other writings on the topic of working on "Stuff that Matters."   This makes for great, motivational reading, especially for the CTO or other technologists since good techies have so much to offer.  There are also a couple good video clips on this topic I've embedded below. If you have yet to watch them please check them out. . … [Read more...]

Pro OpenSolaris: A personal favorite I recommend to all

[amtap book:isbn=1430218916] For a combination of personal and professional reasons, Pro OpenSolaris is the perfect book at the perfect time for this period in my life. As a CTO with enterprise-grade experience I know Open Source Software and its many benefits.  And as a security professional I have long known of the powerful security features of Open Source in general and Solaris specifically.   As a computer scientist I have also been a long time … [Read more...]

Gov2.0: Time for us all to work on something big

On 8 and 9 and 10 September 2009 there will be a great confluence of a cause so many of us believe in and people we all respect and trust. The events those days are the Gov2.0 Expo Showcase and the Gov2.0 Summit. The people so many of us respect and trust include a long list of professionals in and out of government who I know are planning to support and attend.  But as exemplars I'd like to mention the two co-chairs of the summit, Tim O'Reilly and … [Read more...]

The Day DoD KM Died

John Bordeaux is one of the great thinkers of enterprise KM, especially KM related to national security matters.  He blogs at http://jbordeaux.com I wanted to bring your attention to John's writings for a couple reasons.  One is that John continues to work on some of the most important issues facing the nation today and just posted a new entry about his work with the Stupski Foundation. Another key reason to check out his writings is John's recent … [Read more...]

Enterprise Technologies That Will Change CTO Plans

For several years now I've maintained a list of "Disruptive IT".  My focus in building this list is to help anticipate changes in the enterprise IT fabric.  I enjoy studying that and if I can get it right this can be a service to enterprise CTOs. A continual problem in maintaining this list is that it is out of date the second I produce it.  Enterprise-grade IT is changing really fast.  But that is not a reason to stop trying.  It is just a reason … [Read more...]

My Thoughts on the “Washington’s Tech Titans” List

I was a bit puzzled when I found out I made the "Washington's Tech Titans" list assembled by Washingtonian Magazine.   Why in the world would they put me on that list?  Well, it is certainly good press and I'm definitely honored that they would consider me.   Here is what they wrote: "Bob Gourley, founder and CTO, Crucial Point. As former CTO of the Defense Intelligence Agency and a prolific blogger at his site, CTOvision.com, Gourley is a respected … [Read more...]

FedScoop: All source information for federal technologists

One day I want to turn my home office into a command center.  I want cool flat panel displays on the wall and maybe a Touch Table and a Perceptive Pixel device.  Just think of how my clients can be served if I have all the world's information at my fingertips. But, for now, I'll get my info the old fashioned way.  I'll use a single computer screen to dive into e-mail, surf my favorite blogs, read through twitter streams, connect via Facebook/LinkedIn … [Read more...]
