Enterprise Technologies That Will Change CTO Plans

For several years now I’ve maintained a list of “Disruptive IT”.  My focus in building this list is to help anticipate changes in the enterprise IT fabric.  I enjoy studying that and if I can get it right this can be a service to enterprise CTOs.

A continual problem in maintaining this list is that it is out of date the second I produce it.  Enterprise-grade IT is changing really fast.  But that is not a reason to stop trying.  It is just a reason to continually question my own assumptions and continually ask for your input on things I might be missing.

So please take a moment to look over the list and let me know if you think I have left off a key capability that should be there, or if you think I have included a capability that will not be disruptive.

The list is at:

Why not complement this list with one of threats that are disrupting the comfort of "more of the same, just faster, better cheaper?" The Somali pirates are an example. Why are low-tech adversaries beffudling CTOs? What systematic capability blindness allows this to happen?

Very useful list, Bob. It would be great if in future you pick some of these companies and could post more on why you think they are disruptive? (Or maybe you've already done this? I'm coming late to your blog.)

Thanks Frank, that's a good point. I need to keep expanding that and providing more meat and I'll work on that.

    Cheers,
    Bob

I think you raise a very good point… and you remind me that many great CTO/CIO teachers have long said that a good IT effort involves people, process and technology in the right mix. I focus on disruptive technology because it is an important component but really I think Clayton Christensen would point out people and process are what makes technology really disruptive/innovative.
