Gov2.0: Time for us all to work on something big
On 8 and 9 and 10 September 2009 there will be a great confluence of a cause so many of us believe in and people we all respect and trust.
The events those days are the Gov2.0 Expo Showcase and the Gov2.0 Summit.
The people so many of us respect and trust include a long list of professionals in and out of government who I know are planning to support and attend. But as exemplars I’d like to mention the two co-chairs of the summit, Tim O’Reilly and Dick O’Neill.
- Tim O’Reilly has built a global media and communications capability founded on trust and has earned the respect of the millions of consumers of the media he produces and the many attendees of the Web2.0 and related expos he facilitates. Read more about Tim here.
- Dick O’Neill is a leader I have had the privilege to have known for years. I have been honored to be in some of the Highlands Forum gatherings he has pulled together and have been amazed at both his ability to convene the globe’s greatest thinkers and his ability to help them create new knowledge from their interactions. For a hint at the venues he brings together see The Highlands Group. Read more about Dick here.
Other well trusted, well respected names involved in this event include: Dr. Mark Drapeau, Clay Johnson, Bruce McConnell, Andrew McLaughlin, Chris Sacca, John Scott, Jim Stoggdill, and Lena Trudeau.
The cause that will be discussed, as you can tell from the event titles, is Gov2.0. In this context, the term implies the next stage in improving government. The expo and summit will be the first major gatherings of thought leaders from the information industry, not-for-profits, the tech world and government focused on ways to improve the way we carry out the business of the country.
So, what does all this mean? which means, I can safely predict: Something incredible is about to happen.
What do I suggest you do now? Please visit both sites and read the info there. Request an invite to the Summit (it is invite only since an incredible number will be applying to attend). Gov2.0 Expo is going to be able to accommodate a larger number, but you should register now to attend. If you are a CTO of a tech company with capability that should be involved be sure to look for ways to sponsor or be involved in other ways, like demos at the expo.
I also suggest that now is the time to start putting you great ideas in writing. Ask yourself, what idea or concept can help transform government, and how can you express that idea in a way conducive to further action? I don’t control attendance at the summit, but something tells me those with powerful ideas will be rapidly brought into the dialog.
As for me, I’m working on my ideas now, and I hope my ideas will allow me to be present at the summit (if so, I’ll be blogging from there and will keep all up to date that way).

Thanks Dave, this should be a good one. I’ll see you online.

Bob,
I have to admit to being a bit underwhelmed. I submitted a topic idea based on the experience of bringing the RKB system to life with 70,000 first responder users.
I didn’t even get an automated reply, let alone any indication that a thoughtful human being had given consideration to the proposal.
Matt,
You are right, that is underwhelming, but that is out of consonance with the quality of folks working on this so something must be out of whack. I’ll ping the folks about their planning process and see if I can figure out what’s up.
Bob
Great.
Let me know what you hear.
