A Reaction to the iPad

WOW.  What a letdown.  I can not believe that this was the subject of endless hype.  Here are the quick stats (if you haven't found them somewhere else). A4 1GHz Processor 16GB ($499), 32GB ($599), or 64GB ($699) Flash Memory WI-FI enabled, 3G for $129.99 iPhone OS 4 20 Pin Apple Interface 1024x768 Capacitive Touchscreen Alleged 10 hour battery (with WiFi or without? What about with 3G switched on?) And that's about it.  Sure it will play … [Read more...]

Google Apps: They keep adding cool features

While the entire tech world seemed focused on Apple during the iPad rollout, Google just kept serving in silence, keeping the innovation engines running without distraction. I sure enjoyed the iPad rollout.  Although I was a little underwhelmed, I enjoyed watching the presentation and reading about it and enjoyed some good editorials by friends on Facebook. I also enjoyed that Ryan Kamauff used the CTOvision.com blog on 9 Jan 2010 to post comments and … [Read more...]

A CTO Analysis of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s Speech on Internet Freedom

On 21 January 2010 Secretary of State Clinton delivered a speech on the topic of Internet Freedom. This is a very good presentation of policy worth a complete read by all, but I looked through it for statements indicating what we technologists should focus on.  I tried to find the phrases indicating what the Secretary was saying the US should or will do, since that should drive many other government actions and should help technologists think … [Read more...]

Current Internet Explorer security flaw even worse than usual ones: Use Firefox or Chrome

I almost didn't see a need to write this post.  Most CTOvision.com readers, I believe, are technically savvy folks who are already avid readers of security and technology news.   But you are also a very busy bunch and some of you might not have gotten the word yet.  And I thought some of you might appreciate a recap done in a way that makes this easy to explain to others.  This is my attempt: An organization of malicious computer experts who have … [Read more...]

7 Reasons why the Desktop isn’t Dead.

Recently I read a blog from the BITS (Business Innovation Technology Society) blog of the NYTimes entitled "The Desktop: It’s Alive!" I found this to be a very good read, both informative and thought provoking.  Now I am not sure it is fully alive, but rather in a zombie-esque state.  I say zombie because the desktop market certainly isn't coming back fully, but rather it is having a revival period - which doesn't necessarily have to end right … [Read more...]

Google Surprise: A change in intent regarding China

Google did something brave today.  Something I never thought they would do.  They stood up to communist china.  And they did what they did with a speed and certainty that should make us all proud. In a blog post on their official site, Google discloses what they know of several attempted penetrations of their Gmail system.  They also indicate that there have been unauthorized accesses to user accounts, probably by theft of user passwords. In a blog … [Read more...]

Thoughts for the CTO from 171 BC

I saw an interesting statement reportedly by Lucius Aemilius Paulus Macedonicus (229 BC-160 BC).  This two-time consul of the Roman Republic and noted general during the Third Macedonian War (171 BC - 168 BC) offered guidance prior to his involvement in the war, which may have contributed to his ability to achieve victory in what had previously been a messy stalemated theater.  His guidance on advice and the credible sources of advice … [Read more...]

My Thoughts on the Apple Tablet

The Apple iTablet or iSlate is due to be shown off to the world January 27th, and unleashed on us sometime in March.  The blogosphere has been buzzing about the topic.  Joe Wilcox of BetaNews.com said "The world doesn't need an Apple Tablet, or any other"  (full post here).  MG of TechCrunch followed up with "The World Doesn't Need Someone Telling Us What We Don't Need In Tech" (full post here).  I think both writers make some good points, but I … [Read more...]

IT Architecture as taught by Monty Python

One of my friends and mentors, Bill Vass, has consistently advised IT professionals to understand, respect and use the power of well formed IT architecture.  Bill has often reminded me and others that architecture is design.  If you have poor design, or if you have good design that is ignored, then the architecture is worthless or even counter productive.  If you have good, actionable design that is focused on mission needs and used by enterprise … [Read more...]

Motorola Droid Review

Note from Bob Gourley: The following article was written by enterprise technology and mission IT expert Danny Proko and was originally seen on Facebook (you can find Danny there or on LinkedIn). A number of my friends asked me about my new gadget...the Droid...of which I'm the proud owner.  Here’s my assessment after 3 months of intensive use. I’ll break it down by: - Why I bought it… - GUI design and layout….usability…design intuitiveness - … [Read more...]
