Time to stop making so many Android Devices

Incremental upgrades are Apple's thing...c'mon guys!

There are a couple things that Apple does better than anyone else in the commercial market. One thing they do is keep it simple. Some would say they keep it too simple (myself included), but simple + marketing sells, people think they know what they are getting, and thus pay for it. Android manufacturers haven't been able to make anything simple - and that hurts both their products and their bottom line. Right now, Samsung has three different tablets … [Read more...]

LightSquared vs FCC: What is the right position?

Lighsquared-Allegedly-Harmfully-Interferes-with-GPS

An issue I'd recommend all free thinking technologists dive into is the current technological trades facing the nation over LightSquared. They are a company building a wireless network based on Long Term Evolution (LTE) technologies combined with commercial satellite coverage in a way that will cover the entire united states in broadband. The goal: unleash the power of the mobile internet in ways only dreamed of before. LightSquared is not aiming low. … [Read more...]

Screen_Shot_2012-02-12_at_3.10.42_AM_large_verge_medium_landscape

We try hard to understand communications of all sort, from the enterprise to ISP's to big telecom to home and business Wi-Fi the 4G LTE so many of us have been looking forward to for so long. Statistically, one of the most popular posts on the CTOvision.com site is this one titled "How fast is 3G and what is 3.5G and when will 4G really be here?" which tells us many people seek clarity on topics like these. Thanks to SNL we have all just been treated … [Read more...]

International Galaxy Note Review

The Galaxy Note is different from any phone you've ever seen (really)

Samsung released their 5.3 inch behemoth to some amount of fanfare last year. The huge screen, inclusion of a stylus and relative scarcity created a decent amount of news - but then nothing. I recently picked up a Galaxy Note International Edition and wanted to review it for all you out there. The Note is unlike any Android device you've seen - it is broad and tall, yet seems impossibly thin. It is powered by a huge 2500mAH battery, has a stellar … [Read more...]

Recent study finds Apple iOS more crash-prone than Android

The iOS vs Android battle rages on - and Apple is losing talking points

This latest news about the two major mobile operating systems does not look good for Apple.  A new report, created by the mobile analysis company Crittercism, provides a very good (and surprising) analysis of mobile operating system stability In short, Apple's most recent release, 5.0.1, has almost 34% of all iOS crashes, and 28.6% of total crashes recorded. While this is just one study, this is awful news for Apple if it proves repeatable. Android is … [Read more...]

Android App of the Week – Aldiko Sync

Aldiko Sync gives your Android "Whispernet" capabilities

For many of you Android fans, Aldiko (the free epub/pdf/ebook reader) is an app that you use daily. One of my favorite things about Aldiko is that it is easy to use. I can find epubs all over the place, send them to my Dropbox and easily open them on any Android device. This is great, if you only use one device, or only read one book per device. But if you're like me, and have too many devices, this doesn't work. That's why there is Aldiko Sync. … [Read more...]

President’s Daily Brief- There’s an app for that: iPad Used to Deliver President’s Daily Briefing

President Obama receives Presidential Daily Briefing via iPad

The White House photo of the day for 31 Jan 2012 is one to remember.  It shows proof positive that the megatrend towards a consumerization of IT is not only unstoppable, but is changing enterprises everywhere in very positive ways. The photo, shown below, shows two iPad's in use, one each for the President and for Robert Cardillo, Deputy Director of National Intelligence for Intelligence Integration. Cardillo is reviewing several key items from the … [Read more...]

One Month Later, the Galaxy Nexus is still the phone to beat

The Galaxy Nexus has set the standard for all mobile devices

While Apple recorded their best quarter ever, Samsung and Google released the most impressive smartphone to date. Appearing on the Verizon network with LTE radios in the US, as well GSM w/ HSDPA+ radios internationally, the Galaxy Nexus is the most groundbreaking phone available. The mix of 32GB internal storage, a dual-core TI OMAP processor, Android 4.0, a beautiful 720p 4.65" screen and high-speed 4G networks make it the phone to measure to. … [Read more...]

Apple has $46B Quarter – But what does it mean?

Apple knocked it out of the park this quarter - but is it enough?

Apple Inc just had their first $40B quarter ever - to the tune of $46B dollars in revenue.  They sold 37M iPhones, 15M iPads and 15M iPods. Additionally, they sold 5M Mac computers. These numbers are ridiculous. Right now Apple is stacking away a ton of cash - so much so that it makes the $100M they wasted on a spurious lawsuit against HTC merely a drop in the bucket. These numbers are astounding - but are actually not surprising. In this quarter, … [Read more...]

Fixmo Announces Advisory Board, Adds to Board of Directors

Sentinel-Overview1

We have previously written about the Mobile Risk Management leader Fixmo and their relevance to enterprise missions and I have shared my excitement to be on the advisory board of this very virtuous firm (see, for example, Fixmo And Mobile Risk Management For Enterprise and Government Agencies). Fixmo has just announced the full membership of their advisory board plus some additions to their board of directors. Other advisers include: Mr. Wilson … [Read more...]
