Last week, Adobe announced that they were dropping development for Flash for mobile devices and TV. According to Adobe:

“Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer continue to develop Flash Player in the browser to work with new mobile device configurations (chipset, browser, OS version, etc.) following the upcoming release of Flash Player 11.1 for Android and BlackBerry PlayBook.”

Adobe dropped Flash support because of the overwhelming support for HTML5. While HTML5 is still in its early stages and not as advanced as Flash, it is supported on every mobile device (unlike Flash). Adobe has been working hard to get Flash on iOS, which will clearly never happen. I think it is entirely because of Apple’s refusal to include Flash, that this has happened. Flash has never really been GOOD on mobile browsers, especially when it required keyboard entry etc. Video playback was always only decent at best as well.

HTML5 has replaced Flash in all meaningful ways.

This is a surprising step, but I think it is necessary for Adobe. Their Air applications enable a strong development platform. They also take advantage of the fact that Adobe Air is available for Android, iOS and BlackBerry‘s QNX operating systems. This allows Adobe to get stronger and reach more devices than with just Flash.

It is my believe that Adobe shouldn’t have made this about the death of Flash for mobile – but rather the coming out party for Adobe Air. Flash for mobile devices never really went anywhere, but we can hope that Adobe Air will.

The designers of the technology are some of the greatest minds in the security business. The company CEO, Sandeep Tiwari is a world renowned IT business professional with extensive experience in delivering functionality at scale. He has also created technologies and has a history of success. Zafesoft’s co-founder A Shukla has two decades of successful technology creation experience and a proven track record of delivering security systems. Zafesoft’s chief technical advisor is the world famous inventor of SSL. He created SSL while the chief scientist at Netscape, and through compelling vision and well thought out algorithms he led the community in turning this capability into one of the most scalable security systems on the globe.

This team has delivered capable solutions and should be cause enough to get your attention.

So, what is it that their capability Zafesoft will do?

Imagine you had access to the greatest technical talent and a deep understanding of enterprise needs around data security, software functionality and mission. What would you design a system to be able to do?

Zafesoft probably exceeds your requirements for security while keeping data functional for users.

Here is a bit of info from the Zafesoft website:

Organizations need to share sensitive information with employees, contractors, third parties, vendors and others. These needs can be divide into two broad categories:

Read Only Sharing – Such as PDF or other files shared with multiple users across organizations. Authorized users can only ‘view’. Users cannot copy, paste, edit , print screen, screen scrape, or otherwise take the secure content. The sharing could be time constrained.

Sharing with Edit – Such as DOC, PDF, XLS or other files can be securely shared, edited, and collaborated upon. They are never available to unauthorized users. The users with edit rights can edit content in its native editor, without new learning. The information is secure from print screen or screen scraping etc. The content is NOT stored in the CLOUD.

There is also a need by department or project, or roll-up but not roll-down security.

Sharing by Department/Project – For information that needs to be shared within a department or a project, but NOT across them. The users that belong to multiple projects will be able to work with information from the multiple projects, but not copy from one to the other.

Zafesoft ‘s security and tracking of sensitive information in office or text files allows users to view, edit, copy, paste, and otherwise use this information, creating new documents or pasting portions of it into other files, with complete ease of use.

Product Features:

Secures information in files (such as .doc, .pdf, .xls, .txt, database reports, etc.)

The secured information is accessed in its native editor (no proprietary reader or conversion needed).

The information is persistently secure, no matter where it goes or portions of it go.

The secure information or files are never stored on a Zafesoft cloud or hosting server.

Information is secure and available to users inside and outside the network.

Information is secure and available online or offline (live internet access not required).

Information is secure on a USB/Flash drive always (expensive encrypted USB/Flash drive not needed).

Information is secure when attached to emails, and distributed anywhere.

Information is secure when stored in the cloud (like Google docs, Web collaboration, public Wiki’s etc.)

Information remains secure, once an employee or contractor leaves the organization, even if a copy of the file is made, it is no longer accessible.

Information can be made view-only.

‘Print’ can be controlled (on or off). Print to PDF files are also secure.

‘Copy’ can be controlled (on or off).

‘Paste’ can be controlled (on or off).

‘Save’ can be controlled (on or off).

Information can be edited, with the native editor (like MS Word, Adobe Acrobat, MS Excel etc.) and remains secure, after its copied to other files or formats.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab looked like it could be a really great foil to the tablet of the year, the Apple iPad. Especially considering the success of the Samsung Galaxy line of phones (powerful Android 2.2 devices for every major carrier). However, it is my belief that the Galaxy Tab will both fail to compete with the iPad and may even dissuade others from following in their footsteps.

Samsung has learned a few lessons from Apple’s iPad, especially that users really wanted cameras and Adobe Flash in their devices. Thus, the Galaxy Tab has front and rear facing cameras, along w/ Flash capabilities baked right into Android 2.2 (even Adobe Air now!!!). These are great additions to the tablet, but they alone will not carry the day for Samsung. Samsung decided to move to a 7″ form factor from the more common 10″ tablet. Steve Jobs has gone on record stating that Apple has done extensive research regarding the use of 7″ tablets and he believes that they are just not big enough. I myself have used a 7″ resistive tablet for a variety of things, but found it was best for book reading rather than web-browsing.

HOWEVER, I think users will become accustomed to the screen size. We are all used to and enjoy cellphones (of which the largest is 4.3″) and use them to do a large percent of our web-surfing. 7″ will be plenty of space to cruise the web and use TweetDeck. It may even be the right size (and weight) to use one handed. But the size won’t carry the day. Today tablets are all about consumption (with the merest nod toward creation). Will the Galaxy Tab out-consume the iPad? Not in my opinion – the Android market is great, but it is not the App Store, and won’t be for a while.

That said, the Galaxy Tab still suffers from many of the failures of the iPad. It requires proprietary ports and cables to access simple functionality (USB/HDMI/etc). This is a huge failing in my mind, do I need a port or dock to use these with my computer? No, then why must I have them with my tablet? I see this as a mere money grab. If Apple or Samsung sells users a device with limited functionality, the user has already spent $500/600 so what’s another $50/100? I, for one, do not buy into this. What is wrong with shipping a functional product out of the box? Sorry folks, but the ability to output or type shouldn’t cost extra money.

Apple has sold over 7.5M iPads since it launched. That is a LOT of iPads. I am unsure if there is even room for 7.5M tablets left to be bought. I know that I will be buying a tablet as soon as one fits my specifications, and I assume that there are many still like me. Many are waiting for iPad 2.0, many are waiting for a good Android Tablet, and still yet some are waiting for Blackberry or MeeGo branded options.

Bottom line: This November 11th, you won’t see me at your neighborhood Verizon store buying a Galaxy Tab. I will have to wait until notionink (or someone else) can finally quench my tablet thirst.

This article is first in a series of four that will help readers grasp the changes that are being introduced to the web and web browsers with HTML5. This article will provide an overview of the current browser support for html5 and the kind of things that it can do as well as its limitations.

So what’s this HTML5 stuff anyways?

Well HTML5 is an overhaul of HTML4 in some respects (There are many changes/additions to the Document Object Model -- which is the way that web pages talk to the web browser to display markup). There are many syntax adjustments that will make writing and reading web code easier. It also redefines how websites are displayed and gives developers more tools to create media-rich and functionally complete web applications without having to rely on third-party languages, such as PHP, flash, or CGI. In fact, many of the functions of Adobe Flash can now be replicated in HTML5, as demonstrated by html5games.com and this http://srufaculty.sru.edu/david.dailey/svg/curve.svg demonstration of animated SVG images.

This article is first in a series of four that will help readers grasp the changes that are being introduced to the web and web browsers with HTML5. This article will provide an overview of the current browser support for html5 and the kind of things that it can do as well as its limitations.

So what’s this HTML5 stuff anyways?

Well HTML5 is an overhaul of HTML4 in some respects (There are many changes/additions to the Document Object Model — which is the way that web pages talk to the web browser to display markup).

Flash Replacement?

It’s important to note that HTML5 does not replace Flash completely. It doesn’t have the robustness that flash has. Take chatroulette.com for example. It uses flash to access webcam feeds and microphones of the user to connect two users. Many flash games also give you the option to adjust the quality of the rendering, in case you have a less powerful computer. Flash also has connection adjustment for faster or slower internet connections. These factors (plus the fact that Flash content is more protected because of how it can display other content) are all reasons why html5 programming and codecs will not be fully adopted at youtube. You can read their post about it here http://apiblog.youtube.com/2010/06/flash-and-html5-tag.html.

Browser Support:

Currently we have a bevy of web browsers that we encounter every day as IT professionals:

Internet Explorer

Firefox

Chrome

Opera

Safari

Mobile Webkit

This is a lot more than the two browsers that we had clashing a decade ago, back when some of us still called Mozilla by the name Netscape. Now most of these browsers render things excellently. You can check out how your browser of choice fairs with some Acid Tests from http://www.acidtests.org/. Then go to http://html5test.com/ and see what kind of support for html5 your browser has.

Here’s a breakdown of scores in case you don’t have time to install 4 browsers on your computer:

Browser:

html5test.com

Acid 3 Test

Chrome

217

100

Android Browser

176

93

Safari

165

100

Opera

159

100

Firefox

139

94

iPhone(4.0)

134

100

Internet Explorer*

27

20

*version 8. All other versions current as of Oct. 1st

Admittedly, the HTML5 specs have been in flux now for several years, but there is a wild difference in scores here, especially Internet Explorer. What is interesting to note here however is the performance of the iPhone 4 on the HTML5 test. Though Steve Jobs has championed HTML5 over flash, it seems as though the Apple platform isn’t quite as ready for the show as it could be and with developer adoption of HTML5 still gaining traction it makes one wonder why Apple abandoned Adobe so early.

HTML5 Browser Adoption

So what in the HTML5 specifications aren’t yet implemented in web browsers or my browser of choice? Well there’s a helpful website that has everything cataloged and documented: http://caniuse.com. The most interesting of CanIUse.com is the final table of the projected HTML5 implementation for major browsers — a category in which Chrome is once again at the top of the pile. It seems that Google, more than anyone, is pushing HTML5 on all fronts with new video codecs, browser support, and web application implementation (you can opt into the Youtube html5 test if you have a Youtube account).Tune in next time…
In all, the new features of HTML5 break down into two categories: Media/Media functions and Programming features. I’ll go over these features at length in the next two articles, starting with the media functions and how they’ll make life a whole lot better for everyone with HTML5-capable browsers. In the mean time, check out http://rumpetroll.com/, a cool implementation of HTML5 websockets in a fun chat environment.

This periodic event focuses on executives from the IC and the industry companies around the IC. Today’s session of the ICEF focused on industry and commercial technologies addressing the Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative.

It is hard to capture the content of a venue like this. Its true value comes from the dynamic interactions and high data rate conversations that take place throughout. But I thought I should try to provide some gist of what happened so you can determine whether or not you should participate in future venues like this. Give the agenda below a quick glance then I’ll add some additional context:

During breaks several sponsors were providing demos and additional information on their technology including:

A quick gist:

Don Boian of Cyber Command provided great context and a good kickoff to dialog. Then throughout the event, cyber thought leaders in and out of government discussed the state of current technologies and current mission needs in cyber-focused organizations. Some of these mission needs are truly enduring. For example, the need for defense in depth as a strategy and approach vice just point solutions. But today, defense in depth is not enough. Adversaries always find a way in and defenders must continuously monitor and prepare for remedial action. With the incredibly high volumes of data and information around those intrusions new means must be found to gain insights into what is occurring and then determine the appropriate action to take. This must be done so fast new operational constructs around “dynamic defense” are required. Defenders require capabilities that can increase the speed of good guy decision-making. There must be speed in vulnerability detection, speed in intrusion detection, speed in decision-making and speed in execution. Cyber Command defenders use the phrase “operate at network speeds.”

Another common theme throughout the event was a call for enhanced situational awareness in the cyber domain. The bad news is that call has been made for decades now. There has been movement in enhancing situational awareness, but nothing yet fills the need. More work is required.

Another theme was the need to enable humans to interact with data in far better, far faster ways. Cyber data needs to be rapidly run through automated tools that can enable not just search but discovery using tools like Endeca.

Collaboration for cyber related commands and organization is another area where many enhancements have been made lately. In a very good trend, it seems most organizations working cyber defense/cyber operations now know of each other and have frequent interactions. There is more need for enhanced human to human collaboration and even enterprise grade social networking/social media around cyber defense as an aide to bringing the right understanding to situations. A capability to watch here is Jive.

It is not only network defenders that need collaborative capabilities. Developers of software and those that lead/manage/interact with them, including users, need ways to collaborate. The ICEF was treated to an overview of a very positive capability to do that, the DISA led Forge.mil . In my opinion, the positive disruptions from this activity have just begun, far more goodness will come from this project as more and more developers make use of it. It is speeding development of new capabilities and is also laying the foundation of what may be the biggest positive improvement in the security and testing environment in years.

The security aspects of Cloud Computing were discussed in detail. A general statement: If security is engineered into cloud computing capabilities, cloud concepts can significantly enhance the security of enterprises. However, the reverse is also true. If security is neglected in cloud constructs it can doom us all!

The ICEF was treated to an interaction with Tony Sager, one of the nation’s greatest thinkers in cyber security. Tony’s ability to express technological concepts in ways we can all understand is always appreciated. A key conclusion from Tony: we are entering a phase in cyber defense that will require enhanced information management. Note: Tony provided us all with context on some very important concepts that all network defenders should be tracking, SCAP, NDV and FDCC. My personal sense from the interaction was that most in the venue who work closely with security technology new of these constructs, however, it is getting to the point where all IT professionals and all leaders in an out of government need to know these capabilities, even if you are not a security professional. So, a recommendation: accept it as your civic duty to study up on SCAP, NVD and FDCC.

Other speakers, including Dr. Ted Kirscher, Chief Architect of the NSA Threat Operations Center, underscored again the need for new means to conduct highspeed assessment of the right data from defensive devices. Ted, like everyone else who spoke, also ensured we all knew the collaborative nature of the work in front of us all.

For the many people I heard from this was a day well spent, a time to reflect on progress and to think through the next priorities to address. There are some huge challenges that confront cyber defenders, but with new organizational constructs and new focus being placed on the mission these challenges are certainly achievable. Some might still look impossible, but hey, like Walt Disney said, “It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.”

Apple has gone on record frequently and fervently about their decision to not support Adobe’s Flash. As Flash is the delivery system for a lot of the video on the web, as well for games and other applications, I believe that it is extremely important to integrate Flash capabilities. Adobe claims that they will have a Flash capability enabled for Android in the near future. This is key, but is not the be-all and end-all. At some point I believe Apple with have to get on board with Flash, but only time will tell.

Below I have listed the 7 differentiators that I believe are reasons to purchase an Adam instead of the iPad. These differentiators will not be the same for everybody, but these are mine.

1) Android – As someone who does most of their computing with the aid of Google, Android is the next logical step for me. It can easily integrate my two Google e-mail accounts, my use of Google Apps, my calendars, and Google Chats. Having played with Android on a few devices, my primary concern was how slow it seemed, and I know I wasn’t the only one. The 1 GHz processor in the Nexus One provides a zippy experience, and I believe the Dual Core Cortex A-9 possessed by the Adam will be powerful enough to enable a quick and seamless Android experience.

2) NVIDIA Tegra 2 GPU – NVIDIA’s Tegra is a mobile GPU solution. I have blogged about it in the past – but to summarize, it is an extremely capable and efficient graphics processing unit. The Tegra has found a place in the Zune HD and other portable media players, and the Tegra 2 is supposed to be better and even more power-friendly. The Tegra 2 GPU will allow users to output at 1080p, watch HD movies (even Flash HD), and not lose capabilities. On the other hand, the iPad is only capable of outputting 720p.

3) 2 USB OTG Ports – USB On the Go (OTG) ports allow you to plug in and power USB flash drives and even portable hard drives. The ability to instantly increase storage, or access files on a disk at any moment is a great capability. In addition, the USB ports will allow users to easily plug in keyboards, mice, and even devices such as speakers. The Adam is designed to allow interoperability, and will provide a solid computing option when docked.

4) HDMI Out Port – High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is a one cable solution to video and audio interaction. HDMI 1.3b has a bandwidth limit of 10+ Gbps, enabling a large amount of information transfer. Crisp 1080p video and clear Dolby High-Def sound are delivered without any hiccups. HDMI ports are found in HD TVs, Cable Set-top boxes, Satellite receivers, Audio/Video Receivers, and even computer monitors. Many laptops and desktop computers are fitted with HDMI ports. HDMI is the A/V cable of the future (for as long as we use them!). Notion Ink’s inclusion of the HDMI cable in the Adam displays that that are in touch with today’s technology.

5) Additional Storage via MicroSD card - The MicroSD card slot allows for the addition of up to 32GB of storage. This storage could be used for HD video, pictures, or even PowerPoint presentations. Adding storage capability at ones desire enables a more powerful and capable device. 32GB is a large amount of storage for music or e-books, yet for HD video it is still not a lot. Users will have to rely on having a large amount of their HD videos on Network drives and just plug in at home.

6) 1024 x 600 Pixel Qi Display – The Pixel Qi displays are both transflective and reflective LCD screens. This means that you turn on and off the backlight, while the device is in operation. With the backlight off, the Adam will be much like an e-ink reader, except with faster response times. Many people dislike reading backlit screens, and this will be a great selling point. That said, the display won’t be as vibrant as the iPad’s IPS LCD screen. The IPS technology allows for greater viewing angles and better color display at a high cost, but without the ability to turn off the backlight. The Adam’s display is also matte instead of glossy, enabling users to better view outside and in bright light. The Pixel Qi screen has great benefits. Most notably, with backlight off, it boasts a battery life of 160 hours. Lastly, the screen follows the 16:9 format, providing a great widescreen display for video viewing.

7) Rotating Camera – Adam comes equipped with a rotating 3.2 MP camera. This camera enables web chats and just taking pictures. The lack camera is one of the most oft lamented parts of the iPad, and Notion Ink made sure not to make the same mistake.

Despite these improvements over the technical specs of the iPad, it would be rash to dub it an “iPad Killer” or crown the Adam out of hand. Notion Ink must fight the marketing machine and momentum Apple has in the personal media land. Since 2001, Apple has had a controlling share of this market, and it will be tough for anyone to dislodge them. In the tablet wars, everyone will be picking camps, and right now I am firmly in Notion Ink’s.
