What if you combined that with 75 million other data feeds? And combined it with an easy-to-use-tool and impressive visuals? What if it were a service software?

That’s exactly what the Social Media Command Center from InTTENSITY is. It’s your social media and Internet war room — replete with maps, calenders, lists of events and people. Its primary purpose: to allow users to quickly view their search/filter information and utilize it to make intelligent decisions based on social media information from the Internet.

How it works:

InTTENSITY servers constantly crawl over 75 million social media sources. As the data is imported into the system, a set of processing rules defined by the user is run over the imported data and marked up. This markup data can be stored on request by users for up to 6 months from the implementation of the rules.

Processing rules are created by using a workbench, a thick client which allows users to create processing rules using the natural language processing engine. Creating a rule with this method requires some training, but allows for very powerful rules and high levels of specificity. Without using the engine, users of the social media workbench can create simple searches based off of keywords or simple metadata such as location. All rules are processed by the engine and assigned critical information such as positivity and negativity ratings (how did the user feel about what they were talking about) and location.

Once data has been marked with the processing rules, it is sent to processing clusters and then displayed to the user on the Social Media Command Center which provides a very intuitive interface for people to view their topics, location, and more. The interface provides easy methods to drill down topics and get into the details.

Easy as Pie

This technology is possible because of the 75 different patents that InTTENSITY holds in processing this type of information. It’s also because the InTTENSITY product is a conglomeration of two strong natural language processing engines put together. This, put together with the access to the 75 million data feeds and the entirety of twitters traffic (excepting private tweets), combines into a technology which any marketing or intelligence official would give their left arm for.

Everyone Gets a Slice

The Social Media Command Center and the workbench allow information technology personnel to create and define searches and terms for users to monitor in real-time. This in turn allows people in marketing to determine how the new ad campaign is working, the employees in PR to determine how people are viewing the company, and engineers to discover any bugs or product issues, all in real-time. This tool can provide you total social media knowledge while keeping both time and money low.

The new Republic Wireless cell phone service has been released. This service offers unlimited cell, data and text, for only $19 a month. They piggy-back off of Sprint’s CDMA 3G services, but rely primarily on Wi-Fi for network connectivity. Republic requires the user to log on at least 1 Wi-Fi hotspot (easily your home) but Republic asks that the user jump on any Wi-Fi signal when possible. Republic will track your data usage – and if you use 3G too much they will cut you off (with a warning of course).

The service starts off with an LG Optimus One Android Smartphone with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) for $199. This phone is the pre-paid Android phone du-jour, appearing on Amazon for less than $130. I consider this phone to be absolutely unusable, with only a 3.2″ screen. The screen is only 480×320 pixels, it has a slower processor, and very little memory (though is microSD expandable).

While Republic Wireless is truly going to be a game changer in wireless options (I’m seriously considering dropping my plan to data only and re-porting to Google Voice), they will have to get a handset that is not a complete joke. While there are all sorts of ROMs and Root options for the LG Optimus One (to make it almost useful) they will have to be re-configured to handle the VoIP call switching of Republic Wireless.

No, those are not giant Seinfeld "Man Hands" - it is truly a tiny screen

The special sauce in Republic Wireless is the ability to seamlessly switch to VoIP capabilities, an option that is currently available for Android, but not for the faint of heart at all. I love this move by Republic Wireless – and hope that we start to see more options like this – that offer telecom services for what they truly cost.

Republic Wireless allows 550 minutes, 150 texts and 300MB with 0% Wi-Fi usage. Boost, Virgin and the other pay as you go plans have got to be worried (especially if Roms + flashing capabilities pop up for current pay as you go Android phones). Republic Wireless has re-defined the pre-paid wireless paradigm, and will be a total game changer in the future.

Would you be willing to “commit” to Republic Wireless? If so, please state your reasons, similarly, if not, I would love to hear them.

Keynotes will be delivered by: General Keith B. Alexander, Commander of the U.S. Cyber Command & Director of the National Security Agency, and His Excellency Jaak Aaviksoo, Minister of Education and Research, Former Ministry of Defense, Republic of Estonia. The Showcase was created for sixteen innovative Cybersecurity technologies to be selected from 100 applications by our steering committee. The SINET 16 will present in front of representatives from the investment, research, commercial, civilian, defense and intelligence communities. For more information, please click here.

The mission of SINET is to advance innovation and enable global collaboration between the public and private sectors to defeat Cybersecurity threats. The Showcase is supported by the Department of Homeland Security, Science & Technology Directorate, and public and private sponsors.

Please join us as we continue to give the entrepreneurs a voice and advance innovation through collaboration models. The Showcase takes place at the National Press Club – Washington DC, October 25 & 26, 2011

We will soon be announcing the companies that made the list of the top 16 for this event. I’ve seen the list and believe they are all worthy of the widespread attention this event will give their offerings.

As an example of the types of companies to expect in the SINET Showcase for 2011, consider last years selectees:

It contains a malicious PDF that exploits a new vulnerability that came out over the weekend. The patch hasn’t been applied to the company workstations yet, and it’s too little, too late by the time the email goes out telling everyone not to click on the links.

By the time inboxes are scrubbed and most of the infections have been catalogued it’s clear that this is going to be a security nightmare, since a few dozen machines have been compromised. The attack will take a week or more to fix as desktops are reloaded, servers are checked for more intrusions, and any data losses are reported to the proper authorities.

This is how computer security has been operating at most corporations for a decade. Now enter the world of Secure Configuration and Change Management, or SCCM. SCCM can take the infection turnaround time from days and weeks to minutes or hours, and one of the products leading the charge is Triumfant.

Triumfant’s Configuration and Change Management Tool is an almost completely self-sufficent heuristic scanning software algorithm that manages to neatly sidestep some of the problems with traditional heuristic detection using a combination of patented intellectual property and a gradually changing baseline scanner that is able to move with an IT environment instead of against it.

In a Triumfant environment, baseline behaviors are scanned in groups weekly. These weekly scans are then compared against nightly aggregations of endpoint scans. The nightly aggregations are in turn made up of changes tracked by the user-agent on the endpoint. By comparing gradual baselines within user-defined groups, Triumfant is better able to understand what is and isn’t anomalous, thereby eliminating false positives and negatives.

How are anomalies detected?

The agent on the endpoint hashes all of the files on the hard disk with a cryptographic algorithm, generating a fingerprint for each file. If a file is changed, then the hash will change, signaling a need to compare the old and new versions. The endpoint agent then performs change detection sweeps, comparing hashes of older scans against the MD5 hashes of the current scan. When something changes, a flag is raised and an entry is made in a local change database. The agent also scans a list of over 3000 metrics (such as registry settings) that determine the behavior of the computer.

Every minute, the client makes a connection request to the Triumfant server. If the server responds with a request for the list of recent changes (which it does by default every night) the list is uploaded. All databases and lists are encrypted and signed.

When a rouge application, malware, or an unauthorized user make changes in the system registry, adds files to the hard drive, or modifies critical files in system directories, the endpoint client detects these changes and adds them to a behavior profile. If the behavior is deemed to be malicious, Triumfant flags it as a rouge application and gathers the related system events and changes up into a single, coherent event and prepares them for reversal in remediation. No white- or black-listing is used in this technique, meaning that the server does not need to be constantly updated with new profiles or lists, other than Microsoft windows update signatures, which are used to help determine the patch status of a machine.

Remediation:

Once an undesirable change or application has been discovered, and cataloged, it is presented to an administrator via the Triumfant web interface. The web interface is a highly customisable AJAX application that allows for the creation of new views, reports with charts and graphics, users with different groups and permissions, and the ability to remediate issues with only a few simple clicks.

Simply click on the problem, then click on the remediation button in the left-hand corner. The remediation will be performed automatically by the tool, then put into the list of remediated issues automatically. If for some reason the remediation cant be performed, then it is placed in the “unsuccessful remediation” category. Unsuccessful remediations are not commonplace. Even if important system files are deleted or corrupted, computers in the same group are able to copy files for other group members to use, provided that the hash values matched before corruption or deletion.

Taking it further:

Triumfant has extrapolated on their heuristic detection and automatic remedition because the scanning technology behind it can do so much more. Triumfant scans over 3000 parameters for use in their tool, and it collects this data inside of a large, highly-opimised database, allowing it to be easily used for other applications, such as compliance testing.

Inside of the Triumfant server tool, administrators can import SCAP files to use as templates in compliance testing. Once Triumfant has scanned it’s member computers and determined that they are outside of compliance, the template will be used to build remediations against whatever parameters are out of alignment with the SCAP specifications.

Triumfant can also take the data from its database and insert it into a variety of third-party applications with which it has integration, including ePO and the Remedy ticketing system for high cohesion with existing software. Triumfant has custom-built integration for custom ticketing and tracking systems as well.

Past and Present:

Due to the problems associated with heuristic detection, most CCM software has not seen deep market penetration. Triumfant’s tool has been around for some time, having been fire tested at the pentagon for almost 4 years now, while the company has been around since 2002.

In the next few months, Triumfant will be debuting an updated version of their tool that is able to perform all of it’s functions on Macs as well as Windows computers. By the end of the year a Unix or Unix-variant (Linux, BSD, Solaris) should be out, followed by smartphone variations.

Tools such as Triumfant may very well become the future of computer security configuration management over the next few years. Tools like those provided by Triumfant offer ease of use without sacrificing security, bringing thousand-system compliance requirements into the reach of even small IT security departments. It’s ability to remediate nasty infections (like rootkits) give it a leg up on many anti-virus vendors which must release signatures, patches, and fixes and which will forever lag behind heuristic detection technology.

The Secretary of Defense signed a memorandum on 19 April 2011 which articulates the Science and Technology (S&T) priorities for the Department of Defense (DoD). This memo flows from extensive planning including reviews of all defense missions and architectures to support those missions. The result: seven S&T priorities have been identified for strategic investment.

These seven priorities are:

(1) Data to Decisions - science and applications to reduce the cycle time and manpower requirements for analysis and use of large data sets.

(2) Engineered Resilient Systems - engineering concepts, science, and design tools to protect against malicious compromise of weapon systems and to develop agile manufacturing for trusted and assured defense systems.

(3) Cyber Science and Technology - science and technology for efficient, effective cyber capabilities across the spectrum of joint operations.

(4) Electronic Warfare / Electronic Protection - new concepts and technology to protect systems and extend capabilities across the electro-magnetic spectrum.

(5) Counter Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) - advances in DoD’s ability to locate, secure, monitor, tag, track, interdict, eliminate and attribute WMD weapons and materials.

(6) Autonomy - science and technology to achieve autonomous systems that reliably and safely accomplish complex tasks, in all environments.

(7) Human Systems - science and technology to enhance human-machine interfaces to increase productivity and effectiveness across a broad range of missions

The CTOvision blog will use these seven priorities to continue to inform our writing and analysis. We have already been focusing on Big Data topics that are directly relevant to all of these S&T areas and will continue to do so. Several of these topics are also closely related to Cyber Security, which has long been a focus area of this site.

We have a few immediate recommendations that flow from this memo:

If you oversee technology activities at an integrator serving in the DoD market, this memo should help you build your roadmap of R&D efforts. The Pentagon is also building investment roadmaps but the R&D spending you can influence in your company may generate capabilities that accelerate DoD capabilities faster and may result in significant enhancements to the nation’s defense capabilities.

If you serve DoD by providing solutions, you should immediately invest time in learning and implementing solutions based on the stack of capabilities in the Hadoop Framework. For some ideas on how see Common Hadoopable Problems.

You will find continued articulation of use cases for Big Data, including use cases that flow from this DoD S&T agenda, in the Government Big Data Newsletter. Please sign up to receive this letter and stay in tune with these mission needs.

Learn more about how you can reduce the cycle time and manpower requirements for the analysis of and use of large data sets by tapping into the wealth of free information at Cloudera.

vPro technologies are implemented in the hardware and firmware of the Intel chipset in Intel Core 2 Duo computers and above (at the bottom of this post is a link to a list of vPro-enabled processors) which can provide everything from secure remote management to hardware-assisted virtualization. This suite of technologies holds many computer security advantages for the corporations willing and able to take advantage of them.

When you hear vPro think of Active Management Technology (AMT) and Trusted Execution Technology (TXT). There are other capabilities in vPro but these are the first two we recommend implementing to dramatically enhance your enterprise security.

Active Management Technology

AMT is the Intel implementation of the open DASH standard (DASH stands for Desktop and Mobile Architecture for System Hardware) of the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF). Consider an enterprise where computers may need to have a significant amount of reliable up-time through business hours. Most of the machines when they are left for the night are shut off, which means that at 1:00am, the only time that IT has to push security updates, most of the computers are off and only receive updates when turned on the next day by students, causing up-time issues.

By utilizing AMT with vPro-enabled chipsets, the enterprise IT shop could turn on all the computers on the network, allow them to receive the update, and then turn them back off when it is finished. This saves the organization time, money, and vulnerability exposure from the thousands of users browsing the internet from the machines each day.

Other AMT technologies that have security uses/implementations are remote KVM at BIOS and the ability to remotely isolate PC’s from the network at a hardware level

Trusted Execution Technology (TXT):

The Intel Trusted Execution Technology is instrumental in detecting and preventing malware from running on a vPro-enabled computer. At boot-time, the computer checks the validity of the configurations against stored configurations in protected memory in the processor. If the two don’t match, then it can be safely assumed that some tampering has occurred.

The same sort of approach is also taken with encryption key management. The keys are encrypted within hardware, but will only be decrypted when the environment is the same as when the keys were first encrypted. Thus preventing key theft in the event of exploitation.

The TXT system also allows for increased protection with the both the display and the input of data to a system with TXT-developed software. USB keyboards can be configured to have encrypted communications with the system, and software applications can be developed using more secure system calls to the computer display, preventing applications that sniff internal communications from stealing sensitive information.

Theft Protection:

Theft protection is one of the biggest and most-developed areas of the vPro technology suite. By utilizing the out-of-band communication capabilities built-in the to vPro system, some proprietary Intel technologies, and a 3G wireless connection built into the laptop, fears about stolen laptops and desktops can be alleviated quickly and efficiently using a “poison pill”.

The poison pill is a code that can be sent remotely by system administrators from an asset management console to the device to render it inaccessible and useless by deleting encryption keys and disabling key boot processes. This code can be sent via wireless 3G, wired, WiFi, or SMS to the target device. When the poison pill is sent, the target computer. Different conditions can be set for the computer to activate its theft mode locally as well, such as a specified number of login failures, or failure to check in with the remote server after a designated time interval.

Beyond the Boundaries:

Today’s businesses are more and more often placing people outside of the relative safety of the internal corporate network and into unknown and sometimes even dangerous locales. By setting up a secure method of communications with the corporate network, companies can be more assured of the integrity, confidentiality, and accessibility of their data. But how does a company go about implementing this?

By building a network from the ground-up with compliant hardware, and utilizing a vPro gateway, properly configured clients will be able to establish highly secured and encrypted communications throughout their travels. By combining the security and management features with the roaming security tunnels, a fairly secure system with high accessibility could be achieved by a determined organization.

Comparisons to “Current” Tech:

Most of the issues with current tech is the lack of high-level integration with the hardware, firmware, and software of a computer in the sense that usually a software breach can compromise firmware and sometimes hardware. What the vPro system has done is reduced the available information to be gained from exploiting the operating system, automatically disabled infected and stolen computers, and created a remote viewing and on/off switch that has a high degree of manageability.

Current solutions generally don’t stand up to the same kinds of tasks because the solutions require complex hardware solutions that Intel is offering here in the form of AMT and their Third Party Protected Storage system. Sure, a company could continue to use full disk encryption, VPN’s, and Active Directory, but these solutions lack Out-of-Band communications with hardware, and are all software solutions with their own separate flaws and vulnerabilities that could each be exploited to affect the others (even the full disk encryption has methods for being defeated. vPro technologies could mitigate or negate many current attacks).

Since HTML5’s uptake in mainstream browsers, there’s been a lot of talk about the next version of the web, web 3.0 (even though Tim Berners-Lee dislikes that term).

The “next version” of the web, web 3.0, is also called the “Semantic Web” by many of the leading engineers working on HTML5 and other web standards. The driving idea behind the semantic web is that computers, not humans, will be reading, interpreting, and digesting information from websites and web pages more than humans. Unfortunately, since the data on the web is often in forms that make it computationally complex to parse or recognize, new HTML tags and standards had to be developed and integrated with HTML5 to provide this functionality. Let’s look at a few examples of why this problem required such a solution:

Lets take a simple date, like the 21st of March, 2011. A human can read this instantly and understand that I am talking about a date. A computer, however, has to read the line, verify that this matches some sort of date pattern, and match that to a date pattern to use it.

An even harder sample to interpret would be 2/3/2011. In countries other than the United States, this means the 2nd of March, 2011. If this was written by an American, it could mean the third of February. The computer must do additional research, or ask the user for verification of the actual date. Either solution is undesirable. To fix this problem we have some new tags in HTML5. In this case, the <time> tag will help us out.

Instead of just writing that the concert is on the 4th of March, 2011 at 8pm, we write:
The concert is on the <time datetime=”2011-04-03T20:00+05:00”>3rd of March, 2011.

The datetime attribute allows you to specify time by placing a “T” followed by the 24-hour time, +/- the timezone offset (use 00:00 for zulu time). The pubdate attribute works the same way but denotes when an article has been published.

While time is probably the best example for the semantic web changes in HTML5, it is by far not the only one. The following is a list of some of the semantic web tags included in HTML5 (let me know if you have any good ones you’d like to see added!)

<address> — Specifies contact information for the author of an article.

<article> — Denotes an article, a block of information that stands on its own.

<hgroup> — Group <h#> elements together to create a cleaner DOM flow for interpreters.

<details> — Gives additional information/controls to be shown or hidden.

<summary> — Summary of a document, used inside the <details> tag.

<figure> — Denotes a figure (like a chart, picture, or other self-contained object)

<figcaption> — Gives the figure a caption.

<abbr> — Denotes an abbreviation and its expansion.

<del> — Strike out the text between the <del> tags.

<ins> — Denotes inserted new text. Usually after <del>.

rel=”” — Attribute for links and hyperlinks. It tells the browser (and more importantly, search engines) what relevance the linked document has to the current document. Some examples are provided here.

The reason why these tags are so important really boils down to the heart of semantics, which is the ability for machines to understand the data that we are feeding them. Thus, by adding these tags, we can do much more targeted search patterns. For example, imagine a search engine in which you can search for all the news articles published between 2010 and 2011 by author “X”, but only those that happened to link to videos in the articles. This is only one example of everyday consumer use. Enterprise use could have much more of an impact for internal search engines and document management, especially for law and security firms that need to keep hundreds of thousands or even millions of documents. Instead of being overwhelmed with search information or having to somehow add all sorts of document information, by inputting documents with simple HTML markup, many document management problems could be eliminated. Imagine a world where you can cross reference all articles containing the date “1-1-2011” with mentions of “New Years Party” in the document summary. That’s what the semantic web is all about — easy, built-in data mining.

That’s pretty cool, but the descriptors that have been given to us by HTML standards are not even close to what we need to describe vague things like hot or cold, or people who aren’t authors of the page. Of course, you could probably add things into the HTML tags like classes inside of <span> tags (many microformats do this!) but this turns out to be a pretty inelegant solution because it quickly balloons your filesize if you have many things that you wish to tag or mark inside of your documents.

A Brief Intro To RDF

Enter the bold new world of RDF — The Resource Description Framework, where everything can be linked to anything and even queried for information, just like a SQL relational database (with similarly styled structure and a similarly named query language called SPARQL). The idea behind this initiative is to give the entire web some sort of way to crawl over a document and what it contains more easily. Anything can be described by RDF, as illustrated in this example from the Wikipedia Article on RDF

<rdf:RDF
  xmlns:rdf="http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#"
  xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">
        <rdf:Description rdf:about="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Benn">
                <dc:title>Tony Benn</dc:title>
                <dc:publisher>Wikipedia</dc:publisher>
        </rdf:Description>
</rdf:RDF>

In the future, look for more RDF and a few, other, formats that make use of the same principles, as well as another article from CTOvision.com about RDF and how to leverage it. RDF and its brethren are far too complex and comprehensive to fit in as a side note to HTML5, as the example well illustrates.

In my next article about HTML5, I will go over the security features present within HTML5 and any security challenges that HTML5 presents to organizations.

This event, sponsored by Carahsoft, included presentations, discussions, panels and a tech expo all focused on the issue of “Big Data” in the federal enterprise.

Attendees heard from speakers like Dawn Meyerriecks, Deputy Director of National Intelligence for Acquisition and Technology and Dr. Aaron Drew of DoD’s Business Transformation Office and Kirit Amin, CIO of the Bureau of Consular Affairs at the US Department of State, and Tim Schmidt, CTO of Department of Transportation. We also heard from some of the IT industry’s greatest technology firms. And throughout we encouraged direct dialog with participants through question and answer discussions.

Results are still being analyzed and we will be posting more in the coming days at http://ctovision.com But here are some general takeaways on the topic:

Participants in the forum came because we share common challenges with overwhelming data, including massive amounts of data now and more coming in the future.

As in the commercial sector, government use of the term Big Data is not consistent among all users. And frankly we probably need a variety of approaches to that concept. The missions of agencies vary and so do data requirements and so will approaches to massive scale data.

That said, we heard some good, probably useful descriptions of “Big Data” in this forum. One participant described Big Data as “The data that is too big for you to currently deal with.” Another called it ”The Data that cannot be analyzed, yet.” Another called it “Datasets that have grown so large they are awkward to deal with.”

There are no simple answers to overwhelming data challenges, but one thing is clear. The answer to our challenges is not “less data.” The reasons we have so much data is we seek to support missions and serve citizens. We need more analysis and understanding, and we need smart data solutions. And all indications are we will need increasing amounts of data.

We need more automated tools, more advanced models, more distributed analysis and processing capabilities, and a better treatment of analysis as a discipline. These are not one-time-fix needs. We need a long term focus on Big Data. One speaker called this the “decade of analysis.”

New approaches to Big Data missions in the federal space may include more social media, more crowdsourcing and better designed big data systems.

Designing for sense-making means treating the design of Big Data systems as a discipline.

This concept of Big Data as a discipline in the federal space was apparent throughout the day. Many participants in the forum called for a focus on Big Data as a discipline worthy of systems engineering and a career path all its own. And the community is calling out for enhanced bodies of knowledge in this domain.

Big Data issues are not only about sensemaking. There are also issues of data movement, data storage, data deduplication, backup and recovery.

Concluding Thought: Building workable big data systems requires more than just disciplined plans. It requires execution. Community dialog and enhanced sharing of lessons learned and best practice can contribute to execution.

Presentations from the event will be made available soon, and we will provide more analysis in coming posts in our new Big Data category.

Hadoop is a collection of software originally spawned from the Apache Nutch project (Read a little more of its history HERE that is now its own project within the Apache Foundation. Its goal is to provide a highly redundant, self-repairing cloud of computers that can fail out and still be robust, fast, and efficient. To accomplish this goal, it leverages several pieces of software at its most basic installation (there are other distributions of Hadoop which can contain modified or extra software). The entire purpose of the software is to perform tasks that would normally crush computing clusters by breaking apart a question, distributing it, solving the, and then returning an answer — all while using throwaway hardware that is allowed to fail out, be replaced, or simply drop from the node network at any time. How does it do this? It uses Mapreduce, Zookeeper, and the Hadoop Distributed File System. Lets find out a little about how they work together to make some of the worlds best distributed computing software.

Mapreduce

Mapreduce is a software framework designed and patented by Google which allows applications written in many different languages to pass operations into the framework to be broken down into component operations, distributed across a cluster, and then reassemble and return an answer to the application.

“Mapping” is the act of de-constructing an operation into different parts for consumption by multiple computers in a distributed system.

“Reducing” is when the operation parts are received from the cluster systems and built into a single answer.

HDFS–Hadoop Distributed File System

The HDFS is a highly redundant filesystem that sits on top of the filesystem of the host computer. The HDFS has two different nodes in the filesystem — namenodes and datanodes. The namenode is a control node and the datanodes act as storage nodes on the filesystem. Inside the filesystem, the namenode has “rack-awareness” of the datanodes, meaning that it knows where each datanode is and attempts to use this information to reduce communication over the backbone. In fact, jobs will execute on the same rack first, or, failing that, on the same switch.

Nodes, Nodes, Nodes:

Namenodes

Namenodes are the master nodes that store the metadata of the filesystem and control the behaviour of the filesystem. This control is exerted over replication, deletion, and creation of files on the datanodes. This means that if the namenode detects that one file is being requested over another file, it will instruct the datanodes to replicate the more-needed file more often to increase availability. Namenodes (and mapreduce) also structure the filesystem (and jobs in the case of mapreduce) in an efficient, rack-aware manner to decrease the amount of traffic running on the backbone of the datacenter. Replication first goes within the same rack/network switch. Namenodes also perform access control for users and groups.

Secondary namenodes can also be deployed (usually on a separate computer) to take snapshots of the filesystem and the journal of changes to the filesystem. Like many database systems, hadoop uses a journaling filesystem, which means that changes are logged to a file before being applied to the file system to allow recovery in the event of failure. The secondary namenode decreases the amount of time it takes to recover because it keeps more up-to-date snapshots and a shorter change log to be applied on restart than the primary namenode. In short, its a form backup that makes the system faster in the event that it must be restarted.

Datanodes

Datanodes store the data and perform replication, deletion, and creation of files as instructed by the namenode. They make and read or write operations to existing files without explicit input from the namenode in order to carry out assigned tasks from mapreduce. Each datanode has a rack id in order to route traffic around the filesystem in an efficient manner.

ZooKeeper

Zookeeper is a distributed coordination service for distributed applications. It performs configuration management, provides a naming service, does leader election (selecting nodes to organize a task), Synchronization, and notifications. Basically this service keeps all of the nodes in line, working together, and disseminates this information using a distributed model.

This list reviews the companies regarded as having very high potential to change the way IT is done in large enterprises.

For a company to be on the list they must have a currently shipping capability that appears to be a real game changer in enterprise IT. Many companies that were previously “disruptive” in their capability are not on this list because everyone is using them now, so please don’t expect every cool capability to be here. Also, we try to look for more than just disruptive technologies. As pointed out by Clayton Christensen in “The Innovator’s Solution,” the biggest disruptions come when technologies allow changes to strategies or business models. That sort of disruption is what enterprise CTOs and CIOs look for. Also of note, the focus of this list is on the enterprise. There is quite a bit of disruption occurring on the big Internet and in comms markets and elsewhere that is also exciting, but not all hold teh same potential for dramatic disruption.

Please look over the list at http://ctovision.com/disruptive-it and if you have suggestions let us know.

Thanks!
