Recently I read a blog from the BITS (Business Innovation Technology Society) blog of the NYTimes entitled "The Desktop: It’s Alive!" I found this to be a very good read, both informative and thought provoking. Now I am not sure it is fully alive, but rather in a zombie-esque state. I say zombie because the desktop market certainly isn't coming back fully, but rather it is having a revival period - which doesn't necessarily have to end right … [Read more...]

My Thoughts on the Apple Tablet
The Apple iTablet or iSlate is due to be shown off to the world January 27th, and unleashed on us sometime in March. The blogosphere has been buzzing about the topic. Joe Wilcox of BetaNews.com said "The world doesn't need an Apple Tablet, or any other" (full post here). MG of TechCrunch followed up with "The World Doesn't Need Someone Telling Us What We Don't Need In Tech" (full post here). I think both writers make some good points, but I … [Read more...]
Finally: A (real) Dual Monitor Laptop
gScreen, a small but ambitious laptop maker, is preparing to release 15.4" laptops that actually have two screens. The screens slide apart, allowing you to use either 1 screen or 2. Currently, the specs include 2 LED back-lit screens (should help cut down on power usage), Intel's Core 2 Duo mobile line, DDR2 RAM, and NVIDIA graphics, either 9800M GT or the Quadro FX 1700M. The 9800M GT would be suited for gaming/everyday desktop use, while the … [Read more...]
What will your Laptop will look like in 2015?

CIO magazine recently published a great review of laptop technologies titled "Meet the Laptop You'l Use in 2015" (available here: article). With this post I'll provide a review of that article and insert some thoughts from a technology early adopter and disruptive IT analyst. First some concepts from the CIO Magazine article: The Slider Much like a sliding cellphone, this laptop is two OLED (organic light emitting diode) displays that slide … [Read more...]
Are Netbooks the Solution for You and Your Firm?
Netbooks, the hugely popular and (surprisingly) successful mini-notebooks are taking the workforce by storm. These lightweight accessories are becoming a must-have for the professional on the go. A combination of processing speed, hard drive space, and portability, they are what laptops were meant to be. But are they right for you, or your end-users? Here at CTOvision.com, we have created a little quiz to see if a netbook can fulfill your … [Read more...]
The Disruptive Power of Netbooks
The idea of light-weight, low-cost, but very powerful laptops designed for a smaller feature set than traditional laptops has been around for a decade or so. But all indications are that something has changed in the market place. Due to a convergence of many factors, netbooks are growing in sales. These factors include the continual improvement in wireless speeds, the more widespread availability of wifi, the continued drop in cost of hardware, … [Read more...]
Securing Enterprise Data and Computer Power
In March I posted an entry on a significant enhancement in the computing realm, the thin client. That post focused on how thin client computing is changing the net assessment in computer security (see: http://ctovision.com/2008/03/computer-security-a-change-to-the-net-assessment/ ). I've been really pleased to watch thin client computing take off. How widespread is adoption now? In August Sun announced that they had nearly doubled their … [Read more...]
Thin Client Laptops: Functionality, Security, Mobility
For the past few weeks I've been using a unique device -- a totally stateless laptop. It is the Tadpole M1400 Ultra-Thin Client Wireless Sun Ray. Here are some things this device can enable for enterprise users: - Enhanced security. If the laptop is lost/stolen/attacked no data is lost. The data is never in the laptop, it remains in your enterprise. - Enhanced functionality. All users everywhere can get upgrades to the latest software instantly. … [Read more...]
The Future Is Changing Again
There have been several recent announcements by the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project worth note. OLPC is a nonprofit organization founded in 2005 by Nicholas Negroponte and others from the MIT Media Lab with the goal of providing one laptop for every child on the planet. So far they have delivered about 500,000 systems. That's huge by any standard. The first new announcement is that project leaders have now announced that Microsoft windows … [Read more...]
