Recent study finds Apple iOS more crash-prone than Android

The iOS vs Android battle rages on - and Apple is losing talking points

This latest news about the two major mobile operating systems does not look good for Apple.  A new report, created by the mobile analysis company Crittercism, provides a very good (and surprising) analysis of mobile operating system stability In short, Apple's most recent release, 5.0.1, has almost 34% of all iOS crashes, and 28.6% of total crashes recorded. While this is just one study, this is awful news for Apple if it proves repeatable. Android is … [Read more...]

Quickstart Guide: Stand up your cloud-based servers with Amazon Web Services EC2

amazon

Amazon didn't invent cloud computing, but they deserve lots of credit for transforming the business model for providing cloud services through elastic computing (for some history see Jeff Bezos' Risky Bet from Businessweek Nov 2006). They have pushed the economics of cloud computing to be so efficient they are able to offer a 12 months worth of initial compute for free. This is a great opportunity to learn their interface and to test how their computing … [Read more...]

A look at the Google Ecosystem

googletoon

Recently, Dillon Behr (@dbehr24) wrote a great piece about how the consumer technology ecosystem has almost completely fractured - breaking into walled gardens. Those of Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft and the rest are all creating ecosystems with low barriers to entry, but even higher barriers to exit. This post is the first in a series where we will examine each ecosystem in depth. What does Google Have? Google is one of the largest email … [Read more...]

Android Devices now number 190M Worldwide

Capture

In Google's Q3 earnings call, they released that there are 190M Android Devices Worldwide. Google's mobile revenue is now up to $2.5B over the past 12 months. They are adding over 575K users a day, an incredible rate of adoption. The Motorola purchase, which was seen as Google's first foray into device manufacture, has been called a defense of the Android Operating System - a purchase of patents to protect against the onslaught of lawsuits. These suits … [Read more...]

A Look Back At Technology Predictions From Last Year

Last year I wrote up 7 tech predictions for the 2010 year.  I'm happy to say that it looks like I went 5 for 7 (71.4% for those keeping track at home).  Somewhat content to rest on my laurels, I thought we'd go over last years predictions (before we ramp up to this years). 1) Google’s Chrome Netbook OS - well that's a resounding fail.  I'll be the first to admit how wrong I was here.  Some of you even tried to warn me early in the year that I was … [Read more...]

Linux in Minutes : Running Your Windows Applications in Linux

Every time someone mentions switching to Linux at home or using it at work, I eventually get asked “But what about my <insert windows application here>.  Will it work on Linux too?” Short answer: No. Long Answer: Depends. A fair amount of the software that users are familiar with -- like Microsoft Office -- have counterparts that are Open-Source.  Microsoft Office's free doppelganger is Open Office, a program formerly maintained by … [Read more...]

Recommendation for all enterprise techies: Download Win7 now

Windows 7 is really different.  It has more functionality, a better interface, and, if you keep it configured/managed, much better security than previous Microsoft operating systems. Here is another fact about Windows 7:  It is coming to your enterprise, sooner or later. And, since its functionality/features/security are an improvement over XP and older systems and since many of the issues with Vista seem to have been addressed, I think we should be … [Read more...]

Seven Technology Predictions for 2010

2010 will undoubtedly be a year of technology. In 2009, Twitter revolutionized the way we get news, it brought us closer to those who were a part of the news, almost making traditional media irrelevant. I don't know who (or what) will be the Twitter of 2010, but below are a few predictions for the coming year. Google's Chrome Netbook OS will be a hit. Their OS will mostly be dependent on a Google Account. A Google Account opens up their full Google … [Read more...]

Flash of the obvious: you are responsible for protecting your data

I really feel sorry for the modern consumer.  None of us, even those of us with computer science degrees, can really assess the security of our computer systems (at least not with any precision).  We can study historical trends and glean lessons on which operating systems are more secure and we can educate ourselves on best practices and optimal configurations, but how can we really know what is secure and what is not? This has been a problem for as … [Read more...]
