One of the enjoyable things about estimating the future is there is always a new consideration. It is a dynamic task that is never done. This is especially true in analyzing the future of enterprise technology, where things are always moving fast.

We try to find balance in tracking the future of technology by focusing on the metatrends, those very powerful forces that sweep over us all (whether we want them to or not). Megatrends change, but not as fast as the rapidly changing offerings of the tech ecosystem. This allows us to make predictions with a bit more certainty than trying to predict which product or solution or company will dominate. This approach enables a degree of certainty supportive of most strategic planning efforts, even if it does not provide precision around timing or exact manifestation of solutions.

As you leverage our special reports keep in mind that we focus on the business impact of technology, and that very often leads us to discussion about the high tech firms bringing technology to enterprises. There are two other big concepts we want you to think about as you consider high tech firms, both come from the world of biology.

The two constructs from biology to think about regarding enterprise tech are: The Cambrian Explosion and a Malthusian Problem.

The Cambrian Explosion is was a period of rapid evolution and an explosion of life. The Cambrian Explosion began around 542 million years ago. Every living plant or animal today can trace its roots to the startups that began then.

A Malthusian Problem is when a population has outpaced the amount of resources required to support the population, resulting in catastrophe for most. The Malthusian Problem was articulated by Thomas Malthus in 1779 based on observation of famine, and, although Malthus never seems to have had an accurate prediction regarding human population growth and sustainment, he made a pretty clear case that if a population grows too large the result can be catastrophe.

In enterprise IT we have seen the Cambrian Explosion part of this equation, with 1,000’s of companies existing to address enterprise tech needs.

Will the Malthusian Problem part of this equation kick in? If it hits, which tech providers will thrive and which will perish? And what should the enterprise CTO do about it?

The Impact of IoT trends on Due Diligence Assessments:

The trend of IoT is an increasingly important element of corporate Due Diligence since it is disruptive to business models and also because of the unseen risks IoT can bring.

  • On the sell side: Firms should ensure their IoT and Industrial IoT use is done securely and that mitigation strategies are in place for issues. Doing this before sale can make a big difference in how well a firm will be valued.
  • On the buy side: Buyers should pay particular attention to the deployment of IoT and IIoT to ensure a well thought out architecture that mitigates risks. External and independent verification and validation of security policies and practices should include a review of the technical architecture, as well as the degree that the target is complying with appropriate compliance regimes.

How the Internet of Things is Influencing a New Cybersecurity Era

Cybersecurity is the new chief concern for every organization. Recent global attacks like Wannacry and NotPetya have proved that hackers aren’t sparing any institution in their latest show of might. Most companies have thus resulted in the internet of things, and it’s cybersecurity features to help keep their digital assets safe. But does IoT offer the much needed online security?

Analysts agree on the fact that the current technological advancements have rendered the IoTs online security features ineffective. victorian internetIn the late 1990’s Tom Standage released the first edition of a book that would sweep across the tech community because of its incredible analogies to the rise of the Internet hitting the world at that time. The “Victorian Internet“, first released in 1998, was updated and re-released again in 2013. It provided a well written history and meaningful assessment of the rise of the Telegraph, and made very interesting observations about how the remarkable impact of the Telegraph could help us all think through what may happen as the Internet progressed.

I just re-read the Victorian Internet, this time with the Internet of Things in mind, and would most strongly recommend you grab your copy and review it in that context as well. A new wave of technologies is going to sweep over humanity, and with it will come good and evil. And leaders will need to figure out how to sort out the hype from reality in this domain. The many lessons from history captured in this book should help us do that.

There’s a closer relationship between big data and the IoT than most people realize – almost as if they were made for one another. See for yourself.  

Today, we’re going to talk about the Internet of Things and Big Data.

Bear with me here. This isn’t going to be some vague, half-cocked article bogged down by buzzwords and vagaries. Instead, what we’re going to do is take a close look at both technologies – what they actually are and what they actually do  – in regards to how they’re changing enterprise.

More importantly, we’re going to put forth an explanation of how inextricably the two are connected – and how, by understanding that connection, one’s business can set itself well ahead of the competition. Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? Let’s dive right in.

We’ll start by dispelling some of the mysticism and hearsay surrounding the Internet of Things.

What Exactly IS The Internet of Things?

Chances are pretty good you’ve heard the term at least once, right? You’ve probably heard at least one journalist – who may or may not have understood any of the jargon – rambling about how IoT stands ready to revolutionize enterprise. About how it’ll help businesses paint a more complete picture of their operations, employees, and consumers.

In short, you’ve heard a lot of talk about what it can do – but not necessarily a great deal about what it is.

Believe it or not, IoT is, at its core, a fairly simple concept. Basically, what it boils down to is that we’re making our products smarter. We’re embedding Internet-enabled computer chips and sensors in products and devices which traditionally had little to no computing capacity – everything from watches to car engines to generators.

Those embedded chips tend to be a little bit more limited than your run-of-the-mill PC or mobile device; usually, they’re used primarily for data-gathering, offering an enterprise details on everything from how efficiently their machines are running to the purchasing habits of their consumers. Not surprisingly, this is forcing something of a revolution in terms of Enterprise IT – both in terms of consumer products and in terms of internal technology.

“Smart, connected products require that companies build an entirely new technology infrastructure, consisting of a series of layers known as a ‘technology stack,’” explains Michael E. Porter of the Harvard Business Review. “This includes modified hardware, software applications, and an operating system embedded into the product itself; network communications to support connectivity; and a product cloud containing the product-driven database, a platform for building software applications, a rules engine and analytics platform, and smart product applications that are not embedded in the product.”

“Cutting across all the layers,” he continues, “is an identity and security structure, a gateway for accessing internal data, and tools that connect the data from smart, connected products to other business systems.”

Yeah. There’s a reason more enterprises aren’t already tapping into IoT. At this moment in time, to gain any value from the technology would require resources which all but the largest of enterprises are incapable of providing.

Still, there’s a great deal of value to be had from connected products – Porter lists control, optimization, monitoring, and autonomy as just a few of the things the IoT is capable of providing. He goes on to establish that the trend, once it gains further prominence, will serve to significantly increase the bargaining power of both suppliers and buyers, while driving competition to an all-time high.

The benefits within enterprise are just as compelling.

“IoT technologies allow for real-time and accurate data sensing and wireless transmission of that data to Web applications and servers connected to the Internet,” explains Mindtree researcher Ronak Sutaria, talking to Infoworld. “This leads to a more precise and accurate monitoring and control of physical systems.”

In other words, it’s going to change the market in the same way as every truly disruptive technology before it – those who can adapt to it will thrive, and those who can’t, well…

I’m sure you can figure that one out.

How IoT Will Drive Big Data Adoption

As I’m certain most of you have already surmised, the significant increase in connected devices that’s due to happen at the hands of the Internet of Things will, in turn, lead to an exponential increase in the data that an enterprise is required to manage. Here’s where IoT intersects wonderfully with big data – and where it becomes evident that the two trends fit one another like a glove.

“Once the Internet of things gets rolling, stand back,” warns Howard Baldwin, writing for Forbes. “We’re going to have data spewing at us from all directions – from appliances, from machinery, from train tracks, from shipping containers, from power stations. If that doesn’t get you thinking how to handle real-time data feeds, nothing will.”

“But here’s a suggestion,” he adds. “Start now.”

Fact is; the Internet of Things is still very much a nascent trend – it’s still in its infancy. It hasn’t started to produce an overwhelming deluge of information. But that doesn’t mean it won’t.

Big data, on the other hand, has been around for a while; long enough that it’s starting to come into its own. Analytics tools designed to handle large, fast-changing volumes of information are gradually becoming accessible to small and midsized organizations, while data science is looked upon as a legitimate – and highly-valued- field of study. In short, for most businesses, the timing has never been better to look into the adoption of a big data strategy.

“The Internet of Things will lead to an unimaginable explosion of data,” reads a piece on Big Think. “Listening to that data, making sense of it, and effectively acting on that information will be essential, and this massive shift that’s underway will no doubt help businesses do just that.”

In Closing

The Internet of Things is still a relatively new concept. While larger enterprises like Coca-Cola, General Electric, and Domino’s Pizza have managed to tap into its value, most businesses will have to wait some time before they can really enjoy the advantages of embedded sensor technology. In the meantime, it’s imperative that those businesses prepare by adopting a big data strategy – and looking into analytics technology.

Big data capacity is, in essence, a prerequisite to tapping into the Internet of Things. Without the proper data-gathering in place, it’ll be impossible for businesses to sort through all the information flowing in from embedded sensors. What that means is that, without big data, the Internet of Things can offer an enterprise little more than noise.

Pew Report: The Internet of Things

The Pew Research Center Internet Project, one of the current initiatives overseen by Pew Research, is attempting to mark the World Wide Web’s 25th anniversary with a thorough look at the Internet’s future. The most recent report is called the Internet of Things, a phrase for modern devices that feed data back and forth – including wearables, smartphones, appliances, vehicles, and computers. The report contains both unequivocally optimistic predictions and very cautious predictions about technology’s future.

1,606 technology experts were asked, “The evolution of embedded devices and the Internet/Cloud of Things—As billions of devices, artifacts, and accessories are networked, will the Internet of Things have widespread and beneficial effects on the everyday lives of the public by 2025?” 83% answered “Yes”; 17% answered “No.” After asking the experts to elaborate, Pew identified several common trends among the responses.

These themes include: the use of wearable devices will grow significantly; the digitalization and datafication of nearly every human action will pose immense challenges to privacy; brain-to-network connectivity will probably not exist by 2025; the ballooning dependence on technology will have unintended and complex consequences; individuals outside the digitalized world will be seriously disadvantaged – separated by “digital divides”, and the nature of interpersonal relationships will likely undergo significant changes. The report provides long quotes elaborating on these trends from the surveyed experts, which include a research scientist at MIT and a vice president at Google.

The quotes offer interesting – and sometimes frightening – predictions about the future of information technology and the Internet of Things. The report is lengthy but worth the read for individuals interested in what connectivity might mean ten years from now.

The Internet of (Secure) Things – Embedding Security in the IoT

We’re seeing a glimmer of the future – the Internet of Things (IoT) – where anything and everything is or contains a sensor that can communicate over the network/Internet. The underlying technology enabling IoT is Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications. Your running shoe tracks your workouts, sending the data to a mobile app. Your wristband tracks your daily activities, including sleep patterns. Your smartphone controls your television. Your tablet displays recorded videos from your home DVR, anywhere in the world. Your refrigerator tracks your food consumption and contacts a nearby grocery store to restock (someday delivered by drones!) Your car self-tunes and in the future may self-drive and be aware of your schedule (so will self-start and adjust the environment when it’s time to go to work). These are examples of consumer-oriented sensors and devices, but that has occurred in parallel with business, professional, infrastructure, government and military applications. Here are some examples…

Healthcare: Think of medical devices and how they’ve progressed – pin pricks for testing blood sugar to diabetes pumps to contact lenses that can monitor your blood sugar. Pacemakers can report statistics on your heart to doctors and hospitals.

Homes/Offices: Companies and utilities are building sensors into major appliances and HVAC systems. You can opt-in to smart metering so that a utility can load balance energy distribution. That capability is starting to reach into the home, with NEST thermostats and smoke detectors for example. Security alarm systems have communicated with operations centers and police for a long time, but now allow monitoring and control from your smartphone. These smart home technologies are also being applied to smart office buildings. Sensors throughout a building monitor power demand, air temperature and moisture, light levels and external factors (e.g. weather reports). That data is integrated with the building control system and room schedules to optimize energy consumption.

Transportation: For automotive vehicles, there are speed and red-light cameras, EZ Pass toll payments, bridge stress sensors, and traffic management systems outside the vehicle. Inside, there are diagnostic monitors, heads-up displays, adaptive cruise control, and integration with smartphone or in-vehicle GPS/mapping systems. Similar sensor systems exist for rail, sea and air transportation.

Agriculture: GPS-directed combines and sensors on everything from sprinkler/irrigation systems to soil/fertilizer quality are connected via a mesh network to optimize production and quality (thanks Ray Van Houtte for your graduate work in the 1970’s!)

Military: Sensor systems are being used to improve operations from logistics to the battlespace. By tracking the details of every item, the supply chain can be dynamic and more easily optimized. Sensors on drones and robots – air, land and sea – communicate to human operators, analysts and soldiers in the field to improve situational awareness and tactics. There’s even an Android app that leverages M2M communication to a scope to enable a sniper rifle to hit the target every time, regardless of the shooter’s expertise.

Last year, there were over 10 billion connected devices, and estimates predict this number to climb to anywhere from 30 to 50 billion by 2020. In terms of sensors, HP Labs estimates that we’ll hit 1 trillion before too long. To leverage the data and information across a number of these areas, HP Labs is working on a project called CeNSE (Central Nervous System for the Earth)

CeNSE intends to deploy billions of nanoscale sensors that detect and communicate information across all five human senses. The goal is to better understand our world in order to improve resource management and predict dangers to safety and security in the physical world.

With these burgeoning capabilities, there needs to be some focus on cyber security. In my previous blogs, I wrote about continuous monitoring. In today’s current environments, attempts to continuously monitor enterprise security are challenged to track their current assets, which for large organizations number in the hundreds of thousands. The IoT will multiply those assets by a million or more. Today those assets are built on a variety of platforms and operating systems; the software is rarely patched and their communications are not secured. We’ve already seen examples of exploits of these systems – automobile telematics, pacemakers, smart TVs, and more. Science fiction depicts the worst of these scenarios in movies like “Terminator” or “The Matrix”, with machines taking over the world. In the latest of these, Ray Kurzweil’s idea of the singularity moves to the dark side, with a human intelligence taking control of the IoT in “Transcendence”

Things aren’t necessarily so dire. The need to embed security in the IoT, from sensors to mobile apps to back-end infrastructure, is recognized and there are a number of efforts working to address the issue.

In private industry, there are companies using their expertise in cybersecurity to provide solutions in this space – QNX, acquired by Blackberry, and Mocana. QNX is a mature Unix operating system that over the years has built the most secure real-time operating system (RTOS) for embedded systems, Neutrino. It’s being used in automobile systems, home appliances, and to secure M2M communications.

Mocana is working on a new type of product code called AtoM (App-to-Machine) that will allow different users to manage and control devices securely, depending on their authority. In addition, they have built a Device Security Framework that provides end-to-end security for any device, based on US Government standards and regulations

On the open source side, there is an effort to build common communication platforms and interfaces for the IoT called AllJoyn that simplifies device information and configuration, onboarding, notification, control, and audio streaming.

Similarly, the AllSeen Alliance expands AllJoyn’s framework to multiple manufacturers and communication fabrics.

By enabling the integration of the variety of devices to communicate and connect, these initiatives will provide a common framework to secure and monitor the IoT. It’s something we have to build in to the IoT ecosystem now. If we wait, we’ll be playing catch-up, just like we are in Internet security – but at a much larger scale. Of course, with billions and trillions of devices and sensors, the accumulation of this information leads to a discussion of big data and big security data, which I will address next time.

Organizations can establish alerting, tipping and queuing policies that work on their own or integrate via easy to use APIs to ensure various policies are implemented the way the organization wants.  For example, an organization may wan to enforce a rule that says no cell phones or any device that can pair with a cell phone can be inside a building. Or perhaps it is ok to bring a cellphone into the building but not in certain rooms of a building.

Bastille knows device location with precision, not just by the cellular signal and not just when the device connects with a cell tower, but all the time. It locates and knows each device transmission even if it is encrypted. Other signals besides cellular are detected and located, including Bluetooth and WiFi.
