A look at some great Big Data papers

FCW offers a number of quality Big Data papers for your perusal

Federal Computer Week has a collection of Big Data reports available online and in PDF format. These papers provide context and insight into today's Big Data capabilities and challenges. Our very own editor, Bob Gourley, was used as an extensive source for these papers. They are titled the following;

  • Why you should care about Big Data - "Local, state and federal government agencies are accomplishing their missions by leveraging “Big Data” in a wide variety of ways.  More than six out of 10 respondents to a new survey agreed that unless they implement and use Big Data it will be more difficult to meet their agency's mission."
  • More robust analytical tools needed"The current state of information management might be summarized as, “Too much data, not enough insight.” Roughly half government agency officials in a new survey agreed that their current Big Data platform can't support their current tasks. And with three-quarters of respondents from government agencies feeling at least somewhat overwhelmed by their ever-growing data stores, it’s not surprising they are searching for more robust analytical tools."
  • The data deluge conundrum"The deluge of data is a familiar theme to any government IT department today. When it comes to Big Data initiatives, however, the challenge isn’t simply the growing amount of data, but the variety of data that must be compiled and analyzed."
  • The Big Data talent hunt - "When it comes to attracting skilled technology workers, Big Data can seem like a Big Game Hunt. In a survey conducted in August 2012 by the 1105 Government Information Group, more than half of 200 organizations expressed difficulty finding and keeping knowledge workers and data scientists for Big Data efforts."
  • Overcoming the Big Data challenges"While government agencies are exciting about the prospect of using Big Data to solve pressing problems, they realize they must first address a wide range of concerns, from business to technology issues."
