Robots On The High Seas: Intel partners with Rolls-Royce to develop autonomous cargo ships

OK this is cool. We all know robots are coming. Imagine what they can do on the high seas! What if this lowers the cost of international commerce? Should be good for all. A rising tide raises all boats!

Rolls-Royce is partnering with Intel to use Xeon Scalable processors on ships and in datacenters as part of a global system for autonomous cargo ships. Cargo shipping is the backbone of the world economy but a few companies are willing to invest millions in cyber innovations in the shipping sector. Rolls-Royce, the engine maker from the United Kingdom is first such company to make any notable investment in the shipping industry. The partnership follows the announcement last year of an ambitious timetable to have fully autonomous shipping fleets deployed by 2025.
