Messaging is a critical function for any organization. This is especially true for the Military and Intelligence communities, where it is imperative that vital messages reach intended recipients as quickly as possible.
The first messaging system was hand-written notes. While functional, these did not provide a timely way to get a message to a recipient quickly over a long distance, and could be intercepted. With the advent of the telegraph system, message transferal became much faster, but no more secure.
With computer technology on the rise, there was a need for a more advanced messaging system. In 1958, the first computerized message switching system for the Department of Defense called AUTODIN (AUTOmatic Digital Network) was created. AUTODIN helped to ensure secure, accurate, and timely message delivery for the DOD, as well as the Intelligence Community. AUTODIN remained in service until its replacement by the Defense Message System (DMS) in the 2000’s, which had features to make messaging more secure and ensured fast and accurate delivery. Unfortunately, DMS did not live up to expectations; therefore a new solution was needed.
That new solution is the Information Transport Service, or ITS. ITS is the new, modernized infrastructure for information exchange for the IC and the military. It focuses first on Organizational Messaging, and assures the exchange of actionable information across the Community quickly and accurately.
ITS uses updated protocols such as JMS, and more robust formats such as XML to provide a standards-based infrastructure for assured delivery and information sharing. It adds new features beyond the original text-only mode of its predecessors, such as supporting rich text and attachments, and enabling publish-subscribe information sharing models. This allows more and better data, including pictures, maps and documents, to become part of a message, and greatly expands the ability to share information across communities of interest.
Legacy Messaging Systems, however, cannot handle these rich messages or dissemination methods, creating a new problem to be resolved. Until those legacy systems can be replaced or modernized, a gateway solution is necessary to support both the legacy clients and modernized transport, and bridge between the two. That is one area where Brandes AET’s solution, Syndeo Intelligent Gateway, takes on a vital role. Syndeo converts the new, richer messaging formats to existing legacy formats and back again, ensuring that information continues to reach its destination, whether new or old.
Syndeo handles not only information to and from ITS to legacy clients, but also information between peer ITS networks. For systems and networks already using the ITS services, Syndeo also has been configured to provide border client services to receive, decrypt, validate, store, parse, filter, transform, route, and re-encrypt messages and information to and from the border between one ITS enclave and another.
