Addressing WhatsApp’s Fake News problems
After the recent spate of lynchings in India, the IT ministry has asked WhatsApp to curb the spread of false messages, saying the service “cannot evade accountability” for misinformation that has led to killings. With over 200 million users in India, WhatsApp has a massive Fake News and misinformation problem. WhatsApp is now taking some steps to curb the fake news nuisance which has claimed dozens of lives in India. It will be making all messages private by default and giving group admin special powers to delete disapprove unwanted messages before they are posted. The message creator will also a unique ID which can be easily tracked back to him/her in case it creates hatred. Source: Media Nama. This is very serious and yet another example of the importance of society needing to decide how we want our technology to function. There are also an incredible number of privacy considerations regarding What’s App, and also many new initiatives designed to make the product profitable for Facebook (see recent WSJ report on breakup with founders).
Facebook’s disclosures under scrutiny as federal agencies join probe of tech giant’s role in sharing data with Cambridge Analytica
The Cambridge Analytica heat on Facebook refuses to die down. According to sources, the US Department of Justice which is probing into the Cambridge Analytica-Facebook scandal has broadened to focus on the actions and statements of Facebook. It has further involved agencies like FBI, SEC, and FTC in the probe about the two companies and the sharing of personal information of 71 million Americans, suggesting the wide-ranging nature of the investigation. Letting People Know About a Blocking Bug
Somewhere in the week between May 29 to June 5, Facebook users suddenly found that the FB users they had blocked became automatically unblocked. The issue caused serious outrage on Twitter and Facebook. Facebook has now clarified that the unblocking of blocked users happened due to a bug. It further added that it will be notifying 800,000+ users who were hit by a bug in Facebook and Messenger. Source: Facebook News Room.
